Antje Hurlburt

 A Conversation with Antje

What is your current job? Please list the title and briefly describe what it involves

Owner, Hurlburt Environmental Engineering.

After several years working for consulting firms, I now run my own environmental consulting business. It involves assisting clients with meeting environmental and health and safety compliance requirements.

What made you want to pursue a career in engineering?

I studied Environmental Engineering. It seemed like the perfect fit for my interest with our environment along with having the education to do something about obstacles in our way to caring for it.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

The variety of work is my favourite part of my job. Most of my projects are smaller projects which allow me to be involved with many different clients and manufacturing facilities. I love seeing how products are manufactured and helping our Canadian manufacturing sector meet and hopefully exceed their environmental requirements.

How do you celebrate National Engineering Month?

I’ll be reading up on the accomplishments of my fellow women in engineering in the 30 in 30 profiles and looking forward to visiting the College Royal Open House at the University of Guelph to check out the current Engineering presentations and how the engineering building there has been expanded for current and future engineers.

What advice do you have for young women who hope to pursue a career in your field?

Try to learn and complete as much work as you can in the early years of your career and don’t be afraid to tackle different project areas. If you can, take co-op semesters during University with a range of different employers. This will establish your resume and let you determine which area you would like to focus on during later years of your career. Most importantly, believe in yourself. We can do so much more than we often think.
