Sunny Day S’mores

What you will need:

  • A pizza box (you can use a donut box as well)
  • Plastic wrap
  • Tin foil
  • Black construction paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • A ruler
  • A pen
  • A skewer/pencil
  • Classic s’mores ingredients:
  • Graham crackers, a chocolate bar, mini marshmallows
  • Optional: Thermometer

Measure 1-2 inches from all four sides of the lid of your box. You can draw a dotted line on the side that attaches the lid to the bottom of the box.

Adult supervision is required for the next step.

Using scissors, cut at the solid lines (the red lines shown in the diagram below).

Simply fold at the dotted line back and forth. You now have a new smaller lid, and the larger (original) lid. Open up your smaller lid, line it on the inside with tin foil and secure it with tape. Open up your larger lid, line it on the inside with plastic wrap and secure it with tape so that it is covering the “hole” you cut out of it (kind of like a window so that you can see the inside of your s’mores oven). If your larger lid is open, the inside of the lid should look like this:

If your smaller lid is open, the bottom of your box should look like this:

  • Open up your larger lid, and line the bottom of the pizza box with black construction paper and secure it with tape.
  • Ready your ingredients to make s’mores, and place them on the construction paper at the bottom.à
  • Close the larger lid.
  • Prop open the smaller lid using a skewer or a pencil.
  • Change the angle of the smaller lid and box so that sunlight reflects as much as possible off of the tinfoil and onto your s’mores. You can also keep a thermometer inside of the box if you wanted to see how hot your homemade s’mores oven gets.
  • This is how your s’mores oven should look in the end:

Questions to ask:

  • What role does the tin foil play in helping the s’mores cook?
  • What role does the plastic wrap play in helping the s’mores cook?
  • Why use black construction paper instead of white or lightly coloured construction paper?
